British-Nigerian
Organic Agriculture Summit (BNOAS)
Theme:
Harnessing Organic Agriculture for Food Security, Human and
Environmental Health and National Development.
The
Organic Agriculture Centre – OOCORD is pleased to announce
a British based organic agriculture Summit that will focus
on harnessing organic agriculture for food security, human
and environmental health and national development. There is
an urgent need to target these major areas of our economy
and diversify from the oil sector while building a broad base
developmental plan and advancement of our great nation, Nigeria.
This unique summit will be the first pan British – Nigeria
Organic Agriculture meeting to link organic research, Nigerian
organic agriculture network with British Stakeholders through
the Coventry University, HDRA and the British Soil Association.
This initiative was conceived to address the following key
priorities, challenges and prospects of organic agriculture
in Nigeria:
•
Organic agriculture production and mechanization.
• Public and Private Partnership in Organic Agriculture.
• Crop and Animal Protection strategies in organic agriculture.
• Inspection, conversion and certification initiatives
in Nigeria.
• Standards, certification and regulations in organic
Agriculture.
• Organic preservation and processing strategies.
• National and International markets for organic products.
This
summit is urgently needed to put an end to Nigeria’s
annual loss of about 60 billion dollars in the organic market.
There are increased cases of dangerous diseases such as diarrhoea,
cancer, diabetics which may not be unconnected with consumption
of chemical residues in food and these can be effectively
managed through consumption of organic food.
Also,
a lot of environmental degradation is on going as a result
of the usual conventional means of crop and animal production,
this is evident in the depletion of the ozone layer and global
warming and the deliberations in the British - Nigerian Organic
Agriculture Summit could be a way forward in addressing the
problems.
Furthermore,
the summit will assist in opening up the organic agriculture
in Nigeria.
